Gaming Software Review: DOS Box

Gaming Software Revew: DOS Box

Attention "old school" gamers and all-around video game history buffs, there is a program out there that can bring about the resurrection of otherwise dead classics.

For those of us who have been around the gaming scene for what seems like an eternity, we have seen the rise and ultimate fall of several gaming classics. We have watched the stakes get higher, the graphics get better, and evolution of gaming surpass even some of our wildest dreams. In that time, however, we have also stood by (almost helplessly) and watched as some of our favorite games gasp for their last breaths before being laid to rest beneath the proverbial pavement of the super gaming highway. Well fret no more! DOS Box offers a safe, user friendly environment that can bring those classics back from the grave.

Personally, I was stoked to see this program pop up (quite out of the blue actually). There are a lot of games that out there that have all but slipped into memory that I wanted to play, if for no other reason than to just visit my childhood days and reminisce about the feelings they brought about. I'm not going to lie, at first I was highly skeptical and had actually thought it was a hoax of some sort, or even malware. The best part: IT'S COMPLETELY LEGITIMATE AND FREE!!! That's right, I said free! The good folks who developed this software had to have known that one day DOS games would be back in demand, and they were absolutely right. Even Origin has hopped on the DOS Box train and is reviving old games, such as "Theme Hospital" and "Crusader: No Remorse" just to name a few. Now while these games have a special, dedicated version of DOS Box to run them, anybody can download the official copy of DOS Box from the main website provided below and begin the renewal process of their favorite classics.

The only downfall that I see coming from this program is the knowledge of using DOS and understanding exactly how it works. Lucky for those few who don't quite get the basics of DOS programming, there are plenty of tutorials and guides out there that can help!

I highly recommend this software to anybody who has ever had an itch to play those outdated, pixelated games that leave so much to the imagination, I even recommend DOS Box to the younger generation of gamers who want to (and SHOULD!) understand how gaming was, before Call of Duty or Halo or even League of Legends came to be.

In short, DOS Box is more than just a program. It's honestly a very well thought out homage to those games that paved the way to make gaming what it is today.
