Android Game App Review: Burger - The Tasty Burger Game

Android Game App Review:

Burger - The Tasty Burger Game

With so many mobile options out there (i.e Android, iOS, Windows, etc) there seems to be this overwhelming demand for apps of all sorts. "Burger - The Tasty Burger Game" is a game app for Android, but the need for it could be a debatable topic.

For starters, it's free. Not many other words beat that little four letter word, so at least "Burger" has that going for itself. It seems to get high ratings, but honestly... why? Sure the game has a great concept to it. It's almost like a a free-form "Tetris" in that the player has to build the right burger combo and the faster it's built the higher the score. That's pretty much all there is to the game...

Undoubtedly, "Burger" has the potential to be greater. Surely there could be a sequel that gives the player some sort of "Shopping" option where they can spend these coins they earn throughout the levels (This would also be a great pay-to-play model for the developers so that they could update the shop/game regularly). Overall, there just seems to be this... absence, like something is missing. There isn't truly enough here for this app to truly be called a "game" as it dubs itself to be. Sure there is a challenging time concept to it, but give the player more to do. More to interact with.

However, to strip it down and accept it for what it is, "Burger" does a very good job at fulfilling those needs when killin' time is necessary, such as waiting room boredom, or perhaps the occasional "waiting on a friend" routine. So it does hold some quality within these bounds.

Overall, "Burger - The Tasty Burger Game" is anything but truly a "game." If you are looking for some game app that will captivate you and dazzle you with options or splendid gameplay, Burger is definitely not the choice you are looking for. However, if you are just searching for something that is slightly better than being bored out of your skull, download "Burger - The Tasty Burger Game" today!

XBOX 360 Game Review: Ace Combat 6 - Fires of Liberation

XBOX 360 Game Review:

Ace Combat 6 - Fires of Liberation

For over a decade the "Ace Combat" series has been one of the heavy contenders for flight simulator supremacy. From the early days of true arcade gaming to modern day, the "Ace Combat" series has drawn gamers in like moths to flame, and "Ace Combat 6 - Fires of Liberation" is among one of the greatest titles.

So what exactly is it that separates Ace Combat 6 from the rest of the Ace Combat titles? Well for starters it is the first of only two tiles (out of 18 possible) that were actually released for XBOX 360. That is a statement in and of itself simply because the Ace Combat series has been somewhat of a "Sony Playstation" staple. This was huge in the fact that it broadened the customer base, and gamers such as myself who have played other titles, were not exactly disappointed.

The gameplay of Ace Combat 6 is exactly as one would expect: the high flying aerial maneuvers and intense dogfights edged out by the very real risk of stalling or crashing is what etched Ace Combat's name in stone.  While still holding true to this fun factor/realism hybrid of gaming, the plot of Ace Combat 6 only heightened the experience. The dialogue of all characters involved meshed with the story-packed cinematics bring the struggle between two warring factions to life. Throw in a target-rich environment and it's any high-paced action shooter's dream.

While the gameplay holds a lot of the gold to AC6's success, it should also be noted that AC6 has a wonderfully designed "unlockables" section. It basically requires the player to retry all of the missions on different difficulties, or try different paths, or even scout out the area for a codename designated enemy to shoot down. There is absolutely no possible way to get bored with this game's single player mode.

On the flipside, however, it is the multiplayer mode of Ace Combat 6 that is far less than impressive. With only a handful of missions to fly, plus limitations on said missions, the thrilling idea of PvP dogfighting all but crashes and burns. The multiplayer phase of AC6 was clearly not a fully developed idea, and then if this wasn't enough, all it really takes to own the field is the choice of any Su plane and the deathmatch is locked down. However, what if everybody is choosing the "Su-33 Flanker D"  or the "Su-47 Berkut?" Then all of a sudden the player will find themselves in an endless loop of unimaginative fights that don't really lead anywhere.

All in all, Ace Combat 6 holds true to its predecessors by delivering that "edge of your seat" combat style mixed with some threatening flight realities, such as stalling or crashing. However, if the consideration for buying this game is real, please make sure to buy it for the right reasons. The single player mode of Ace Combat 6 is absolutely phenomenal and the replay value is undoubtedly limitless; just make sure you stay completely away from the multiplayer mode, which is nothing but disappointment.

Alpha Test/Prototype Review: Scrap Garden

Alpha Test/Prototype Review: Scrap Garden

If one were to look at the history of gaming and understand that there was in fact a beginning, platformers would be the most memorable. Not only did platform games really start to define the video game world, but they have found a way to also revolutionize it and have therefore become a constant staple in the video game world. "Scrap Garden," even in it's Alpha Demo state has also found a way to leave its mark, even though it is so early in production.

For starters, the graphics are so very well put together. It really defines itself in the way the setting looks and conveys a very clean palette to the player. The colors of the landscape are simple and not overpowering, yet they also seem to pop in places. This said, they also enhance a feeling of despair. Immediately, the player understands that there is something amiss in the tired little town where our hero wakes up and its this simple color scheme that guides the player on their journey.

There are a number of features that make this demo actually feel like a completed item. The one feature that stands out first and foremost (especially in an Alpha Demo) is the simple fact that it is compatible with an XBOX 360 controller. The reason why I find this important, is because there are so many games out there, which are completed products, that don't have full-controller support. This is a huge step in the right direction, especially when it comes to playing a 360-degree platformer as it allows pretty much anybody to jump right in and start playing without the confusion of controls.

While the controller adds the true feeling of "gaming" to Scrap Garden, there is also a lot that can be said with the player's ability to actually interact with the environment. There are several different instances in which this is important. Whether it picking up an object to use as a stand to reach a higher level, or using that same object as a hurled weapon, Scrap Garden does a wonderful job of presenting a sort of freedom for the player to achieve the same goal in several different ways.

Environment interaction, although key to any game nowadays, isn't complete without a sort of "mini quest." And yes, Scrap garden delivers on this note as well. The mini quest presented in the gameplay is simple, but quite important. Simply put, the player must gather up little red crystals in order to advance into the next chapter. These crystals can be rounded up in a variety of ways, from simple free-world gathering, to smashing boxes, to even killing enemies, Scrap Garden shows just how important it is to truly explore the surroundings.

Finally, there is the icing on the cake: cinematics. While cut-scenes are inherently taken for granted, it says volumes that the creators are actually taking this into consideration for something as simple as a demo. It gives the player something to latch on to and really rounds out the overall experience by helping the player to understand the story before it's actually been told.

Taking all of the above into consideration, Scrap Garden is most definitely on its way to being a great product once it is fully completed. And as many are anticipating its arrival, Scrap Garden will most certainly deliver on its end when the time comes for a "Full-Game" Release.

Browser Game Review: King of Towers

Browser Game Review: King of Towers

"King of Towers" is a game that delivers on expanding the tower defense genre by adding several features that include an RPG element as well as in-depth kingdom-building.

When one thinks of "Tower Defense" immediate the idea of strategic placement of towers to stop baddies comes to mind. There are hundreds, if not thousands of Tower Defense titles out there that most certainly uphold the truest of genre expectations. "King of Towers," however, separates itself from the crowd with it's unique "kingdom" idea. While there are the standard missions that test your wit and intelligence with tower placement, it's actually the time between missions that makes the most impact.

There are so many features that are included with the game that make it a truly unique experience. First and foremost, there is an actual "side quest" bar that attributes the player with a plethora of resources based upon the objective completed. From experience, to gold, to inventory items, these quests are a surefire way to keep the user interested in playing the game and even achieving certain goals. With these side quests, there is also the entire kingdom that needs to be considered. Consisting of one screen cram-packed with so many buildings, it becomes quite clear that this isn't your average "beat it and delete it" type of game. It's this exact concept that will send "King of Towers" to the top of any strategy game enthusiast.

There are even sign-in bonuses and online rewards that can be redeemed based upon a certain time-frame or over the completion of logins in a certain succession. The game even goes one step further to include an inventory with a plethora of items and several "heroes" that the player can not only train, but also fully customize. Other features include a "taxes" system, a PvP option to take on other players, and several different zones/difficulty levels to ensure that the player never gets bored.

Now, with all of this taken into account, it should be pointed out that it could be quite confusing to start off with. Considering there are in fact so many things to do/upgrade/accomplish, newcomers might find themselves getting lost at some points with the slightly muddled interface. This might discourage some players, but after a while, the ideas become more of a second nature. Just hang in there!

Overall, "King of Towers" brings a refreshing concept to the table, especially when it comes to browser-based strategy games. And although it may not be the first true RPG/Tower Defense hybrid, it definitely makes a strong case for itself when compared with other options.

Browser Game Review: Seventh Saga

Browser Game Review: Seventh Saga

As most alpha/beta gamers out there know, Unity is a great tool that brings forth great games from great ideas. One such game is "Seventh Saga."

In this simple yet addictive game brought to us by DragonXVI, the player controls a demon-like entity whose only mission is to corrupt the land and slay whoever gets in the way. Sounds simple enough, right? Here's the catch, it revolves around the concept that every time the player makes a move, so do the enemies on the board. What I mean by that is, when the player moves over a tile, any enemies that are around will attempt to move closer and ultimately attack. The overall goal as the warlord is to capture key points, that vary in difficulty and range.

While the concept is very basic, the difficulty of achieving said goals is what makes this game so much fun. The player can't just simply dive at a target village/spire/castle, they have to strategically capture smaller targets in order to tackle the bigger structures. This can be quite nerve wracking if the points aren't captured in a somewhat specific order. But again, this is where the fun begins. As the user captures rally points, those rally points will begin to produce demonic minions to aid their warlord in the battle against the righteous. Also, once captured, said rally points will begin corrupting the land around it in a random fashion that crawls outward. These corrupted tiles will give the player an added attack bonus so that our villain can ultimately conquer the land!

Another neat little feature that this game offers is the ability to slay animals, so that all that is left is a hunk of meat, which in turn regenerates health. This is such a cool feature because it allows the player to set up little "pit stops" should their HP fall below a desired point.

But wait, there's more! While the hunks of meat obtained from slain pigs/lambs/rabbits give back a small amount of health, leveling up will restore the player's HP to the maximum amount, allowing for ultimate carnage while in the midst of battle.

Taking all of this into consideration, the creator of this game really knew what they were doing and anybody who plays it, will most certainly agree!

Browser Game Review: Neuronball

Browser Game Review: Neuronball

If you are looking for a game that combines the world of robotics with the concepts of competition and team management, then Neuronball might just be for you!

There is so much that can be said of this wonderfully addictive and funny little game. So let's just delve right in. For starters, the game is absolutely free to play and it has a nice pay-to-play model. What's great about Neuronball's pay-to-play options is the simple fact that there is no "necessity" pay. There are so many things that the player can do in order to rank up and make credits (the in-game currency) without paying a single dime. That said, should one feel the obligation to support the game's development, there are plenty of payment options that won't break the bank, nor will the payment seem wasted.

So... it's free to play. That's great in and of itself, but what really separates this game from the rest of the crowd is the actual concept: create a team of A.I. controlled robots (called Neurons) and pit your team against other player-managed teams and go for the gold! The competition is global and it's a really fascinating idea. There is no player interaction with the robots when the matches actually start. It is really all up to your Neurons to outsmart the opponent and score goals in a soccer-like environment.

As said above, your Neurons are A.I. controlled, but the game gives you so many ways that you can manage the impact of your Neurons out on the field. The first of these options is the simple "leveling" factor. As your games are played, and depending on a lot of factors that take place during each match, the Neurons will gain experience. After a certain experience threshold is achieved, the Neurons level up and this gives you attribute points that can be used to upgrade certain aspects of each Neuron. While the "level up" system is a great way to enhance Neuron performance, there is also "Headquarters" where you, the player/team manager, can build a wide assortment of buildings to help improve everything from Neuron performance to experience boosts to a factory that allows the building of additional Neurons.

Another great thing that this game has to offer is the user-friendly atmosphere. The interface is so easy to read and the site navigation is so simple, anybody can register and within 30 seconds the games can begin. Neuronball is also constantly updating the site and registers announcements to the players so that nobody is left out in the dark.

All in all, Neuronball is a fun, one-of-a-kind experience that pretty much anybody and everybody can enjoy!

Alpha Test/Prototype Review: The Static Speaks My Name

Alpha Test/Prototype Review:

The Static Speaks My Name

If in fact there was a game, be it in alpha state or prototype, that left the user/player hanging with absolutely no sense of accomplishment, "The Static Speaks My Name" would be that game.

First and foremost, the alpha test/prototype of this "game," is actually very solid in the way it was crafted. The actual skeleton for this game is amazing in the amount of depth that the player has to interact with each item in the setting. Credit is due where credit is due, and that said, the creator really did put a lot of thought into the layout of this apartment. However, this is the only truly positive thing that can be said of this game.

So let's call a spade, a spade and be honest, this isn't a "game," it's a suicide simulator. I find it disgusting, while completely and utterly lacking in content of any sort. There is absolutely nothing the player can take away from this game other than negative thoughts and essentially a step by step guide on how to die by the noose. This is not creative media, this can not even be placed in a video game genre. That said, I refuse to call this a game. It is not a game. What it is, is simply a sick tool developed to play upon the darker, most sensitive feelings of the human being.

Normally, I am a "glass half-full" type of guy. I like to see things for what they are and strip it down to the best possible situation. With that said, there is just absolutely no use for this garbage on the internet. Already, there are too many problems in real life. The idea of "gaming" is to have fun. Many of us play video games to escape or relax. Suicide is not "funny" (and to describe a simulator as such is grotesque). It is a very serious matter that nobody, and I absolutely mean NOBODY, needs to be reminded, is an option.

In closing, I can honestly say the suicide simulator has some great structural concepts and the best part of the tool was exploration of the apartment. However, with this being the only glimmer of praise, I refuse to support the idea of this game and honestly find no need for it on the market. If the creator was looking to be controversial, then they certainly achieved new lows. My advice: Go back to the drawing board and come up with something a little more useful.

This is normally where I plug in a website for information, however, due to my own personal convictions on the content and integrity of this game, I will refuse to forward any support. Please, find a true game, an actual game, and have some fun.

Gaming Software Review: DOS Box

Gaming Software Revew: DOS Box

Attention "old school" gamers and all-around video game history buffs, there is a program out there that can bring about the resurrection of otherwise dead classics.

For those of us who have been around the gaming scene for what seems like an eternity, we have seen the rise and ultimate fall of several gaming classics. We have watched the stakes get higher, the graphics get better, and evolution of gaming surpass even some of our wildest dreams. In that time, however, we have also stood by (almost helplessly) and watched as some of our favorite games gasp for their last breaths before being laid to rest beneath the proverbial pavement of the super gaming highway. Well fret no more! DOS Box offers a safe, user friendly environment that can bring those classics back from the grave.

Personally, I was stoked to see this program pop up (quite out of the blue actually). There are a lot of games that out there that have all but slipped into memory that I wanted to play, if for no other reason than to just visit my childhood days and reminisce about the feelings they brought about. I'm not going to lie, at first I was highly skeptical and had actually thought it was a hoax of some sort, or even malware. The best part: IT'S COMPLETELY LEGITIMATE AND FREE!!! That's right, I said free! The good folks who developed this software had to have known that one day DOS games would be back in demand, and they were absolutely right. Even Origin has hopped on the DOS Box train and is reviving old games, such as "Theme Hospital" and "Crusader: No Remorse" just to name a few. Now while these games have a special, dedicated version of DOS Box to run them, anybody can download the official copy of DOS Box from the main website provided below and begin the renewal process of their favorite classics.

The only downfall that I see coming from this program is the knowledge of using DOS and understanding exactly how it works. Lucky for those few who don't quite get the basics of DOS programming, there are plenty of tutorials and guides out there that can help!

I highly recommend this software to anybody who has ever had an itch to play those outdated, pixelated games that leave so much to the imagination, I even recommend DOS Box to the younger generation of gamers who want to (and SHOULD!) understand how gaming was, before Call of Duty or Halo or even League of Legends came to be.

In short, DOS Box is more than just a program. It's honestly a very well thought out homage to those games that paved the way to make gaming what it is today.

Alpha Test/Prototype Review: Alpages - The Five Books

Alpha Test/Prototype Review:

Alpages - The Five Books

In this first ever Alpha Test/Prototype Review from BTN Gaming, we are going to focus on a game that is not only breathtaking in its early graphics phase, but also terrifying with what very little there is to access.

For so many years now, the genre of Survival Horror video games have entranced gamers with their lack of defenses, puzzle solving, and (let's face facts) the sheer uneasy feeling of dread. If this type of game excites you, then Alpages - The Five Books is a game you NEED to keep your eye on. At this very moment, all that is available to play is a basic prototype that is available to download. Now, when one hears prototype, it's surely not a pretty picture. One can most certainly expect an incomplete project of some sort or fashion. While some of this holds true, the Alpha test of Alpages - The Five Books still delivers on that most tantalizing of Survival Horror games, the fear factor.

After selecting a few key features on the launch screen and clicking the "Start" option on the menu screen, the player is thrown into a world of darkness. The countryside is dark as various animals roam over a vast (and I do mean VAST) landscape. Random sections of fog cover the countryside in patches and ominous glows and flickers can be seen for what seems like miles in every direction. As if this wasn't enough to send the mind wondering, disturbing images and voices flash across the HUD and fill the speakers with sinister taunts. Now mind you, THE GAME HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN.

So, in the midst of a dark countryside, with the mind playing tricks already, a lone runner must find their way through the wilderness in order to grab up five books and end the game. Simple enough, right? WRONG! See, the objective is to gather five books, but here's the catch: every book unleashes a new terror to the landscape who is all but hellbent on making sure that you don't complete your quest. There are no axes, no shovels, no guns... Only those two meat stumps you call legs and random glowing plants that you can eat in order to regain some health points so that you can forego your ultimate doom.

All in all, I could sit here all damn day and try to convey to you this volatile concoction of grossly beautiful graphics and sinister mindplay, but really, it will not do it justice. With that said, this Alpha, this "Alpages - The Five Books" is most definitely worth trying. And if this seems to be your cup of tea, then you should also make sure you bookmark the developer's website to stay updated on any progress it is making towards it's final release.

Gaming Software Review: Curse Voice

Gaming Software Review: Curse Voice

Snatch up those headsets, rally up the team, and get ready for your competitive matches, because Curse Voice delivers a performance that surpasses all other communication software.

For years, the competitive gaming scene has been around, and for just as many years there have been communication platforms that allow teams to communicate in order to be at their most effective. Roger Willco, Raidcall, and Skype (just to name a select few) have all made their mark on the gaming world. So what separates Curse Voice from the crowd?

First and foremost, the simple four letter word "FREE" is probably Curse's first distinguishing feature. While other communication platforms offer a "free version" of the software, there is also some incentive to buy services. Whether it's higher quality sound, or the purchase of a private server, other platforms just seem to find a way to make a buck. And this is not at all a bad thing. Some games require this sort of exclusive offer. Curse Voice, for all intents and purposes to the average gamer, doesn't require any additional cost to get the most effective performance. Just simply install, login, call up the squad, and it's game on.

Curse's next biggest feature (and quite possibly with the most impact) is the ability to link up to games directly, such as League of Legends or Smite, to give your in-game HUD a visual on headset and mic status of various party members. Not only does it give the user the direct visual indication that everybody is online, but it also gives a quick reference point to the user should a situation come up that requires the mic or headset to go quiet (i.e a phone call, personal matters, etc). This is so helpful because it doesn't require the user to have to "alt-tab" out to the desktop and lose those few precious seconds that might determine a victory over defeat.

Other features include a friends list that can be acquired through various games, great avatar customizations, and critical in-game tools such as timers or strategy tips. Not to mention the interface is extremely user friendly and anybody can navigate it within five minutes of use

All in all, Curse Voice is a must have for the casual to competitive gamer. There is no price tag, which is a huge plus, but the add in all of the useful tools that help out the competitive scene and one has the "secret ingredient" to a kick@$$ recipe.
